homeless youth services
Within the greater Portland community and York county, Youth Alternatives Ingraham is the only agency working with homeless youth or youth in danger of homelessness who are age 15 or younger. Given the age of our clients, our Homeless Youth Services (HYS) case managers are able to focus on supporting and stabilizing the client's entire family — siblings and parents, too.
How HYS Helps
HYS staff provide advocacy, case management, monitoring and safety assessments. Beyond lacking shelter, our clients may be dealing with health problems, abuse concerns and legal issues. To resolve these concerns, we:
- Link clients to needed services, such as mental health or substance abuse treatment
- Provide basic necessities, like safety, food and clothing
- Help families secure safe housing and improve their financial and social situations
- Strive to reconnect homeless families with their communities
From experience, we know that homeless children are more likely to face barriers to their education than their housed classmates. Assisting youth in returning to school and maintaining their studies is a key focus area for us.
Who HYS Serves
We provide case management services to youth who are 15 or younger. Youth who experience unstable housing, who lack adequate supervision or whose family is homeless qualify for the service, and service is provided until the child is in a stable placement. HYS is available in Cumberland and York counties.
