The Linkage Project

A statewide advocacy and education campaign designed to increase individual and community awareness of the strong link between human cruelty and animal violence. Project leaders were influential in advancing a revolutionary new Maine law that addresses the welfare of pets in violent homes while helping the victims to leave. What’s more, project leaders are training human and animal welfare workers and law enforcement officers from across the state to work together to stop violence against people and pets.

Rolling out intially in Cumberland, Kennebec and Penobscot counties, project leaders are training child, adult and animal welfare workers to recognize, report, treat and prevent cruelty across disciplines. Courses will also be offered to Maine's Department of Health and Human Services' child, family and adult protective workers as well as to mental health support professionals in local schools, animal control officers and corrections professionals.

There is a link between animal cruelty and family violence.

linkage Unfortunately, violence begets violence. When there is animal cruelty in a home, chances are that someone, possibly a child, a partner or an elderly family member, is being hurt, too.
